Thanks again to blog reader Janine for inspiring me to continue with a series of blog posts on Greenboro. In this post, I look at the origins of the neighbourhood, as it is truly unique in Ottawa. The Greenboro neighbourhood stands out from surrounding areas due to its generous greenspace surrounding the houses. In later phases the amount of greenspace was reduced, but is still high. Below is a Google map with the Greenboro area highlighted in yellow. There is noticeably more green space within the neighbourhood compared to the adjacent areas. After the initial phases of Greenboro begun c. 1978, Tartan continued to build in the area, introducing new plans that were also built in Emerald Woods, Barrhaven, and Orleans. A number of these houses in Greenboro were built with cutting edge energy efficiency features for the time. The architecture of the earlier models have a 1980s contemporary style with prominent sweeping rooflines. Later models have a post-modern style with a more traditional-leaning look. Ottawa Citizen.
