Thanks again to blog reader Janine for inspiring me to continue with a series of blog posts on Greenboro. In this post, I look at the origins of the neighbourhood, as it is truly unique in Ottawa.
The Greenboro neighbourhood stands out from surrounding areas due to its generous greenspace surrounding the houses. In later phases the amount of greenspace was reduced, but is still high. Below is a Google map with the Greenboro area highlighted in yellow. There is noticeably more green space within the neighbourhood compared to the adjacent areas.
Over the coming months I will be posting on the different residential pockets within Greenboro.
So far, I have posted on a few areas in Greenboro. I will update the list as new posts are added. Click on the name to get to the blog post:

Below is a Google Map where I have added the names of the different subdivisions and the builder. Please note that these only include the for sale areas and not the rental and co-op enclaves within Greenboro.
What follows are a series of newspaper clippings that tell the story of the origins of Greenboro.
Some interesting notes about Greenboro:
- It was named after Lorry Greenberg, the Ottawa mayor who was inspired to build the unique neighbourhood.
- The design was inspired and based on the town of Tapiola in Finland.
- The original plan was for approximately 40% of the area is dedicated to green space.
- The Greenboro Pavilion was originally an information centre/sales office for the area.
